7 Crucial features to consider when searching long range gun scopes

features to consider for buying gun scopes

Rifle scopes come with many specs and features to consider. When buying a rifle scope you want to make sure you get the right type for your individual needs and circumstances.

There are many factors to consider when you research which scope is going to be the best one to buy.

Magnification and Objective Lens diameter

magnification and objective lens

As with binoculars, there is always a magnification factor as well as an objective lens size indicated for the scope. The best scopes offer variable magnification adjustable according to your needs.
For instance, a scope may have an indication of 6 – 24 x 50

  • That means that the scope can be adjusted to magnify an object between 6 and 24 times, including all the other sizes in between 6 and 24.
  • An object will appear 6 times closer or bigger than with the naked eye, at the lowest setting.
  • At the highest setting, it will appear 24 times closer; in other words, it is magnified 24 times.
  • The last figure (50, in this case) indicates the diameter of the objective lens. The objective lens is the front lens, furthest from the eye.
  • The size of the objective lens is important because a larger diameter means the scope lets in more light. The amount of light that reaches the eye determines how clearly you will be able to focus and see the image quality.
  • A larger objective lens will give you a better image with more detail and accurate color.

Turrets

Turrets

The “turrets” on a scope are the raised knobs that you use for changing your settings.

  • They are located on the top and at the sides of the device.
  • The knobs can have audible clicks or clicks that you can feel as you adjust the settings.
  • For accurate shooting, you need to adjust windage, elevation and parallax settings.
  • These will all help you to overcome the effect of bullet drop, and this is why scopes with these reticle features are referred to as BDC, or bullet drop compensation scopes.
  • Bullet drop is influenced by many factors, and a good scope takes it into consideration:
Distance i.e. The weight of the bullet, Gravity, Velocity, Wind and The power impact of the gun.

Reticles

Reticles

The reticles on a scope are the crosshairs that form the aiming points when you look through the instrument.

  • There are many different types of reticles and you should carefully consider what will work for you. It is a very important feature to look at because it determines accurate aiming.
  • Precision is influenced by factors such as windage, elevation and bullet drop.
The most popular reticle currently is the BDC, which stands for Bullet Drop Compensator. In short, BDC is dotted on the reticle to show how much the bullet will drop as it slows down over a specified distance
  • It is sometimes called a DOA – Dead-On Accurate – reticle.
  • Mildot reticles show a range of dots to help compensate for wind and elevation.
  • Duplex reticles mean that the crosshairs are thicker lines starting from the edges of the picture you see and become thinner in the middle. It automatically draws the eye to the target point.

Settings And Adjustment

settings and adjustments
  • Windage: Windage is when you move the aiming point left or right, according to one of two. specific systems – Minute of Angle (MOA), or Milradian (MRAD)
  • Elevation: Works on the same basic values and principle as windage but it moves the up and down aiming points on the scopes vision.
  • MOA (Minute of Angle): Scopes with MOA adjustment are the most common. In MOA scopes, each click on the adjustment knob represents one MOA.
  • To recap what MOA means: A circle consists of 360 ̊, and the 360̊ can be divided into 60 minutes. Each minute in itself is a small angle, and when aiming and shooting, this mathematics can determine very precise accuracy.
  • In terms of gun scopes, each MOA click will adjust the aim by one inch for every 100 yards.
  • MRAD (Milradian): Milradian is just a different system of measuring a circle. There are 1000 milliradians in a radian and 6.28 radians in any circle. A mil-radian adjusts the effective aim point in your reticle by 3.6 inches at 100 yards range.

Parallax

parallax
  • When looking through a scope, and you make a slight head or eye movement, the reticle can appear to move slightly in relation to the object you are looking at. This is called parallax. When you can adjust the parallax, it will give you greater accuracy when you shoot.
  • On scopes with a lower magnification, the parallax is very small on ranges up to 100 yards and therefore basically irrelevant. However, for large magnification over a longer distance, the parallax can interfere with accuracy.
  • Scopes with high magnification often have a “side focus” knob on the other side of the windage turret. Here you can change the parallax settings until the crosshairs on the scope do not appear to move anymore. It is an important adjustment for exact and accurate aiming at the long-range shooting.

Focal Plane

Focal plane

The focal plane is about two location options of the reticles on your scope. These two options are either First Focal Plane (FFP) or Second Focal Plane.

  • In FFP scopes the size of the reticle changes with the size of the object as you zoom in.
SFP means the reticles are fixed in relation to the object, and it will stay the same when you zoom in. This ensures a clear and stable visual picture as you zoom in and out.
  • FFP is helpful over long ranges because you can have perpetual, fixed Mliradian (MRAD) or Minute Of Angle (MOA) settings over the whole range of magnification.
  • FFP provide flexibility in various settings and is therefore handy as an all-purpose feature for different situations.
  • Body: In the design and build of your gun scope, there are essential factors to consider.
  • Matte finish: it is often used in situations where you need to be camouflaged, it is vital that your scope does not reflect too much light and compromise your camouflage. A matte finish is always a good choice when concealment is important.
  • Eye relief: The eyepiece must be designed in such a way that you can still get a clear, whole image if your eye is a few inches away from the scope. This is to avoid injury to your face or brow when the gun recoils. It is also essential if you wear glasses.
  • Most modern scopes are waterproof, fog-proof and shockproof.
  • Waterproof: Important because you may find yourself in rain or snow, and you don’t want water to get into your scope and damage it or give you a distorted image. This is achieved by O-rings on all outside facing lenses. This also makes the scope dust-proof so that dust particles won’t get inside.
    Fogproof
  • Gas purging, mostly with Nitrogen or Argon gas, is used to ensure that your device does not fog over with condensation on the inside when temperatures change.
  • Shockproof: There are 2 main reasons why a scope must be shockproof:
  • Gun recoil must not damage your scope.
  • You will often use your scope in rough conditions and circumstances and you don’t want to damage it when you run, or if it gets a knock.
